Apex Plant Explosion
The October 2005 explosion in Apex, North Carolina at the Environmental Quality Company hazardous waste plant resulted in a fire that burned for several days. The fire created a toxic cloud that carried hazardous chemicals, including chlorine and pesticides, into the surrounding communities. More than 17,000 residents were forced to leave their homes for two days following the blast.
The Environmental Quality Company plant in Apex was a licensed hazardous waste facility that repackaged and disposed toxic chemicals for businesses. The plant handled hundreds of dangerous chemicals, including pesticides, lead and mercury. Investigators determined that dozens of mislabeled chemical oxygen generators fueled the fire’s rapid spread. Chemical oxygen is highly combustible, and because the generators were not labeled properly, workers at the Apex plant did not recognized the hazard the containers posed.
