EQ Resources Plant Explosion
An explosion at the EQ Resources Recovery plant in Romulus, Michigan on August 10, 2005 resulted in a fire that burned for more than 36 hours. The first explosions occurred at 9:15 p.m., and workers at the plant reported that they noticed an unusual smell immediately before the blast. The EQ Resources Recovery plant processed both hazardous and non hazardous waste. At the time of the explosion, the plant was processing airplane deicing chemicals.
At least 1,000 people living within one half mile of the EQ Resources plant were evacuated from their homes, and at least 32 were hospitalized with respiratory discomfort as a result of the blast. Nearly everyone in the immediate area of the plant complained of sore throats, burning eyes and respiratory irritation. Air quality tests following the disaster showed no significant contamination; however, residents returning after the evacuation found their homes covered in a fine residue. Public health officials warned residents not to touch or inhale the dust without protective gear. Tests of the material showed that lead, arsenic and cadmium were among 37 potentially hazardous compounds present in the fallout from the EQ Resources explosion.
